STUDIO EIGHT

“The Beat” represents life’s beat where the beat is “Eat, Work, Sleep, Repeat”. The beat reflects on the growing interest of fitness going by the motto of “Eat, Gym, Sleep, Repeat”. Located in Adelaide, this will be Adelaide’s first Capsule Hotel combined with a Fitness Education Centre. The Fitness Education Centre provides all the needs required to kick-start your fitness career. Whether that is to become a personal trainer or group fitness instructor. The Fitness Centre includes workout zones, consultation rooms and a lecture auditorium and kitchen space with plenty of seating for study. The courses offered at the Fitness Education vary from short kick start courses to long and intensive courses to learn technique and theory. Meanwhile the workout zones are designed for High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) with more free from to use free weights along with cardio. Using vertical hybridity the Capsule Hotel is located on the Mezzanine level of the building. The Capsule Hotel rooms are small and enclosed spaces which provide a unique experience for the guest. Each capsule is the size of a single bed or double bed with sufficient space for the guest to sit up in bed and crawl in and out easily. The Capsule Hotel provides customers from the Fitness Education Centre, Businessmen and Tourists travelling to Adelaide an affordable place to stay.

The design of “The Beat” shows concepts of conviviality, hybridity, and adaptive reuse.  By using adaptive reuse, the space provides plenty of seating around the building whether that be the main stairs, the lecture auditorium, the kitchen space or within the changeroom basin design. The opportunity to eat and drink through the kitchen space allows the two typology customers to prepare their own meals or grab a quick snack from the self-serve bar. Variety and Intriguing Detail and Colour via playing with colour psychology. The use of the colour Blue represents trust and stability, it can also boost productivity and encourage customers to do more at the gym. Neon elements, such as lighting, are stimulating and energetic. By adding Neon elements to the fitness space or cardio space gives customers energy to get through a workout. Whilst in the Capsule Hotel simple and neutral colours and materials such as off-white, beige and timber materials offer a more pleasant and calming experience, by being less distracting the colours aid focus. Off-whites and neutral colours make the capsules brighter, open and more airy. These two typologies allow the building to have 24-hour usage making it economically sustainable. During the day customers come for the Fitness Education Centre and during the night they come to rest at The Capsule Hotel.

“The Beat” is a fun and exciting space coming to Adelaide, for new and old fitness goers and an affordable place to stay when completing a fitness course or just travelling to Adelaide.
